Frequently Asked Questions

What are my options for financing the solar energy project?

3rd ROC Solar works with a variety of lenders to reduce solar system costs and financing costs. We work to make solar affordable for everyone!

I would love to invest in solar, but I think my roof is too old. Am I out of luck?

Our expert installation team will assess the quality of your roof, and make recommendations for a replacement if the age is not compatible with a new solar panel installation.  We have a network of roofing partners who are happy to provide you a quote for the roof, prior to getting your solar system installed.

Does solar work well in New York State with our weather patterns?

Yes, solar systems work well in New York State. We will design a solar system for your specific house that meets your annual electric demand. Although photovoltaic panels are the most effective with direct sunlight, they still are able to produce energy with indirect sunlight when it is cloudy or overcast. Occasional rain is beneficial for the solar panels, as it washes away and dirt or dust on the panel. Your solar system will generate all year round at various levels.

What rebates are available for solar energy?

New York State has a solar grant that everyone qualifies for. We also have a state tax credit of 25% up to $5,000, and a 30% tax credit from the federal government.

Learn More About How Solar Works for You

What is net metering?

Net metering is like a solar savings account that allows you to build credit when you over generate in the spring, summer, and early fall months. These credits are used in the evenings and winter months when your system is generating less power.

Would it make sense to go solar if we use most of our energy at night?

Yes! When you sign up for solar, you are enrolled in Net Metering with the grid. That means during the day your solar energy system is producing power; anything not used will be sent to the grid and stored as credits. Then, during the night or when you need to use your power, you can pull back that energy you sent to the grid (Please check with your local utility company on their net metering policies.) If you use energy at night, we also offer battery storage options which could save you money. Contact us today for a free quote!

Terminology

What does Photovoltaic (PV) mean?

When somebody refers to photovoltaic panels they are referring to solar panels. In reality, the term photovoltaic in the solar industry can be easily substituted for solar.

Specifically, the word photovoltaic comes from the greek “phōs” which means light, and from “volt,” the unit of electromotive force, meaning that the term photovoltaic can be used in any circumstance in which light is used to produce electricity.

What's the difference between kilowatts (kW) kilowatt hours (kWh) and kilowatts per hour (kw/h)?

While the two terms are often used colloquioally to mean the same thing, the difference between the two is like night and day.

Kilowatts (kW) are a measure of power, and show how much work a system is capable of doing at once. A 10 kW system operating at peak efficiency will always produce 10 kW of power whether it works for 1 hour or 100 hours.

Kilowatt hours (kWh) are a measure of energy, and in terms of solar is used to show how much electricity a system has produced. A 10 kW system which operates for 1 hour at peak efficiency will produce exactly 10 kWh of electrical energy. If it were to operate for 10 hours, it would produce 100 kWh of electricity, so on and so forth.
